HSE - GED

New York State has chosen the General Educational Development Test (GED® Test) for the high school equivalency (HSE) exam beginning January 2022. Individuals in New York State who are seeking a High School Equivalency Diploma will no longer take the TASC Testâ„¢, but will instead take the GED® Test.

There is no fee for the GED® exam. All scheduling is done on-line for approved test locations. There is NOT an option to test remotely in New York. You can schedule your test at any approved test centers. The GED® Test includes four sections:

  • Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Options will be presented for GED® prep classes, study guides -for purchase, free practice questions, tutorials and additional purchases if you choose. 

The exam is FREE to New York residents.

Schedule Your Exam

  • New York does not charge a fee for the ged® exam. You only pay if you order additional fee-based review materials.
  • Schedule from 1 to all 4 subtests. You do not have to schedule all four subtests in a single sitting.
  • If you do not pass a subject, you must wait 60 days before re-scheduling that subject test.
  • You can test 3 times a year, on each subject.
  • There are multiple exam locations with varying availability for days, evenings and weekends.
  • Candidates that have previously passed TASC subtests, need to only test on the subject they did not pass. If you did not pass BOTH Reading and Writing under TASC, you must register for the Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA*) exam.

Accommodations

If you require testing accommodations for the GED® exam, create an account, choose the appropriate option and proceed with your application (carefully follow the instructions). If you were previously approved by TASC for testing accommodations, you MUST submit a new request through GED®. A request for special accommodations will take approximately 3-4 weeks to be processed.
